Level of Connectivity
Current Level
Digital Leased Lines
One 56kb line out to WEdNet and the Internet.
One 56kb line connecting main core campuses (Admin. and high school to E.M.S and
E.E.S)
IP Connections
The primary 56kb link to WEdNet and the Internet currently supports 141 ip workstation
connections.
103 of these systems are with the administrative and high school campus domain.
The other 38 connections are at the middle school - elementary school domain.
We serve clients in multiple buildings with these leased lines by utilizing fiber
optic backbones and other network connections that create our local area networks.
The admin./hs domain has just 22 more ip addresses to be assigned.
The middle/elementary school domain has 87.
Remote Schools Dial-Up
Both Columbia Crest School and Weyerhaeuser Elementary have dial- up accounts that
are donated by RainierConnect. These accounts are accessed via the PSTN over
voice quality lines using 28.8 modems.
Multiplexer
The administrative offices have the connectivity of a Xyplex multiplexer giving
access to such administrative programs as payroll, purchasing and other business
office functions. This multiplexer uses a 56kb link direct to ESD112 in Vancouver,
WA. It also provides our district with several dial-up links for accessing the
DEC VAX system at ESD112 and the WEdNet.
Local Area Networks
All schools in the district have LAN's built upon industry standard category 5
twisted pair wiring. Most of the buildings are primarily running Ethernet IEEE
802.3 running at 10mbps. We still have some legacy Apple LocalTalk segments in
buildings running at 230kbps. Most of these LocalTalk segments are slated for upgrade
to Ethernet as you will find here in this plan. Inter building connectivity is
accomplished using fiber optic cable (802.3 FOIRL), 10base2 coaxial cable, or
10baseT twisted pair copper wire.
We currently have capability to run 328 10baseT connections.
Future Connectivity
T1 out to K20 Network
10mbps fiber connection(Admin/EHS - EMS/EES)
56kb lines out to C.C. and W.E.S. from main campus
IP Connections will increase beyond current capacity necessitating the use of DHCP
type systems. Novell Intranetware and Cisco systems at this time in planning would
be most desirable for this with possibly Windows NT playing a role as well.
Remote school dialup replaced by routers and dedicated leased lines for access.
Additional routers installed in main core networks for bridging and enhanced routing
capability.
Multiplexer being phased out and users retrained and moved over to routed connections
for business applications.
Key network resources such as servers being upgraded to 100mbps Ethernet. 10/100
network switching installed. Heavy traffic areas also upgraded with 100mbps Ethernet.
Additional T-1 line or equivalent eventually being added for video capability.
